On October 26, 2023, Bill C-226, the National Strategy Respecting Environmental Racism and Environmental Justice Act, passed the second reading vote in the Senate and is now headed to the Energy, Environment and Natural Resources Committee for further review. Another step in the right direction!

What’s next? The Energy Committee will examine the legislation more closely by hearing expert testimony. Following this examination in committee, a final report on Bill C-226 will be drafted and Senators will have their say with a vote. If the bill gets the green light, it is off to the third and final reading debate. If the legislation receives a successful vote at third reading, the bill will be on it’s way to receiving Royal Assent to become the first environmental justice law in Canada.
